Rarity drives almost all of that value, and the clearest signal of rarity in this game is whether a horse can be bred at all. Horses outside the breeding system are permanently limited in supply, since the only way to get one is to catch it, buy it while available, or trade for an existing one.

What Keeps a Horse Rare

Horses with Island Unique Hairs, Special Island Unique Coats, ghostly manes or tails, version 1 models, or NPC-exclusive coats such as Infernal and Training Island Unique cannot be selected for breeding under any circumstance. That single mechanic separates these horses from everything else in the game, since breeding is normally how players multiply a coat they already own.

This shared trait is why the community treats these categories as the top of the value scale, even without an agreed order between them. A horse you can breed will eventually become more common as players multiply it. A horse you can't breed stays exactly as rare as it was the day it was released.

Catching Island Unique Hair

Island Unique Hair is tied to specific islands, and in general, higher-level islands tend to produce rarer hair types than lower-level ones. These hairs can't be bought outright and have to be caught, which keeps their numbers naturally low even years after release.

Trading With Bhurnes on Volcano Island

A few Island Unique coats can also be obtained by trading island resources to specific NPCs, and Volcano Island shows how demanding that route can be. Players first have to complete 10 quests for the NPC Bhurnes before he'll trade with them at all.

Once unlocked, the only way to get his trade items is by mining Erupted Deposits, magma stones that shoot out of the volcano roughly every 5 minutes and despawn within a few minutes if left unmined. How many deposits spawn at once depends on how many players are on the island, up to a cap of 5 at a time, so a busier island means more deposits to fight over, not fewer.

Each deposit yields a small number of Volcanic Minerals, and Bhurnes only trades once a player hands over 5 at a time, making this one of the slowest and most RNG-dependent ways to work toward a rare coat in the entire game.

Special Island Unique Coats

Special Island Unique Coats follow the same locked-to-location idea, spawning in the wild on the same permanent islands as regular Island Unique Coats, just at a far lower rate of roughly 1 in 1,500. They're excluded from event-limited islands rather than tied to them, so no event window makes them disappear from circulation.

Infernal Horses

Infernal horses are NPC-exclusive, meaning they can't be captured in the wild or bought from a shop. The only way to get one is by trading with Bhurnes on Volcano Island, and the odds of receiving one stay low even after his trades are unlocked.

Steven's Training Island Unique Horses

Training Island Unique horses are a separate category, obtained from Steven on Training Island through Training Receipts. Turning in 1,000 receipts gets you a Rose Grey Appaloosa, 3,000 gets a Palomino Reverse Dapple Mustang, 5,000 gets a Rose Grey Arabian, and 7,500 gets a Palomino Reverse Dapple Clydesdale, with any other breed carrying those two coats handed out at random at those same thresholds.
